Common auto electrical jobs in Toronto

Toronto is the commercial hub for the suburbs on the western side of the lake, from Rathmines to Blackalls Park. Many residents are retirees or families who travel with caravans, and older cars are common, so towing and wear-and-tear faults top the list.

Caravan batteries that don't charge on the road

Many caravan owners around Toronto find their van battery isn't charging while they tow. On newer cars with smart alternators, a basic wiring setup often isn't enough. A DC-DC charger in the van or car, with heavy enough cable from the battery, usually fixes it. Our guide on why a caravan battery isn't charging while towing explains the common causes.

Electric brake controllers

Trailers and caravans over 750kg ATM need brakes, and heavier vans usually have electric brakes run from a controller in the tow vehicle. The controller must be mounted securely and set up for the van's weight. If the brakes feel weak, grab or don't work at all, the controller, the wiring at the plug or the brake magnets could be the problem. Our guide on installing an electric brake controller covers the basics.

Older cars and starting faults

Older cars that do mostly local trips to the Boulevarde shops and the foreshore can develop starter motor and charging problems with age. A sluggish crank, clicking, or a car that sometimes won't start at all might be the battery, the starter or worn cables. Testing all three together gives the clearest answer. Our guide on whether it's your starter motor or your battery helps narrow it down.

Indicators that flash too fast

A fast-flashing indicator is your car's way of saying a globe has blown, either at the front, rear or side repeater. On a car towing a caravan, it can also point to a bad connection at the trailer plug. Check every indicator globe on the car and van. If you've switched to LED globes, you may need a load resistor or an LED-compatible flasher. Our guide on why indicators flash fast explains why.

Toronto auto electrical questions

Does my caravan need electric brakes in NSW?

Under national trailer rules, trailers with an ATM over 750kg need brakes, and those over 2000kg need brakes on all wheels plus a breakaway system. Most mid-size caravans use electric brakes operated by a controller in the tow vehicle. Check your van's compliance plate for its ATM and make sure the controller is set up to suit.

Why won't my caravan battery charge from my newer car?

Many newer cars have smart alternators that lower their output voltage once the starting battery is charged. That isn't enough to charge a caravan battery through long, thin cables. A DC-DC charger boosts and manages the charge, and thick enough cable makes a big difference. An auto electrician can measure what's reaching the van.

Local tip for Toronto

Before a big caravan trip from Toronto, hook up the van at home and check every light with someone watching: tail, brake, indicators, reverse and number plate. Then test the brakes at low speed in a quiet street. Ten minutes in the driveway is far easier than sorting out a fault on the side of the M1.
