Common auto electrical jobs in Lochinvar

Lochinvar sits between Maitland and Singleton, with paddocks and vineyards on one side and new streets on the other. Drivers here cover big distances, often in the dark.

Towbar wiring on new family cars

A new house often comes with a box trailer, a camper or a boat, and the family car needs a towbar to match. Many late-model cars can't simply be spliced into the tail lights, because the body computer monitors light circuits and throws errors or disables lights. A vehicle-specific harness or a module designed for that car is the right fix. Our guide to whether you need a towbar wiring harness explains why.

Driving lights for the dark stretch

Between Lochinvar and Greta the New England Highway runs through open country, and many locals start or finish shifts in the dark. Good headlights matter, and driving lights or a light bar are popular on utes and 4WDs. Wire them through a relay with a fuse close to the battery, and make sure they switch off with high beam. NSW has rules on extra lights, including how many and where they are mounted, so check Transport for NSW guidance before fitting them.

Weekend trips and dual batteries

With the Hunter Expressway and New England Highway close by, Lochinvar families can be at a campsite in the Barrington Tops or out west within a few hours. A fridge running for a weekend needs a second battery, and on newer utes with smart alternators a DC-DC charger does the best job of filling it. Use cable thick enough for the run to the tray or canopy. Our guide to how a dual battery system works explains the options.

Replacing batteries on newer cars

Most cars in Lochinvar's new estates are only a few years old, and many have stop-start systems with EFB or AGM batteries. These cost more than older flooded batteries and must be replaced with the right type. Some cars also need the new battery registered with a scan tool, so the charging system knows it has a fresh battery. Skip that step and the new battery can wear out early. Our guide on car battery types explains the differences.

Lochinvar auto electrical questions

Can I just tap into my tail light wires to fit a trailer plug?

On older cars, often yes. On many newer cars, no. Their body computers monitor current on the light circuits, and splicing in extra load can trigger faults, blow outputs or switch lights off. A plug-and-play harness made for your model, or a powered trailer module, avoids that. If the car is still under warranty, use a method the manufacturer accepts.

How often should I check the caravan's electrics before a trip from Lochinvar?

Do a quick check before every trip: plug in, test all lights, indicators and brake lights, and check the brake controller responds. Once a year, look at the battery, plug pins, breakaway system and wiring under the van for damage. Vans that sit for months in a driveway often have flat batteries or corroded plug pins when you need them.

Local tip for Lochinvar

Kangaroos and other wildlife are often on the roads around Lochinvar's fringe at dawn and dusk. Good lighting helps, but so does slowing down on the darker back roads. If you fit driving lights, aim them properly after installation. Badly aimed lights dazzle oncoming drivers and light up the treetops instead of the road ahead.
